The Zircon Ore is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mainly found in subterranean and icy locations, such as the Ice Cave, the Frozen Valley, the Freezeflame Dungeon or the Crystal Caverns.
Appearance[]
The Zircon Ore is a roughly spherical chunk of light grey stone that floats in the air. It has two oval holes on the front-facing surface of the stone, each glowing with bright blue light. The rest of the stone is covered in large spikes of blue crystal, presumably zircon.
Overview[]
The Zircon Ore will usually sacrifice itself at the first opportunity, casting one of two annoying spells in the process. It can use Barrier on its allies to greatly reduce incoming magical damage - on higher difficulty levels, this gives the foes Morale on top of an even higher Magic Defence buff, making them very difficult to kill quickly unless Dispel is used. Its alternate option is Freezing Blast; while this isn't especially damaging (especially given the Zircon Ore's pathetic Magic Attack), it has a decent chance to inflict a very long-lasting Freeze effect on the entire party, leaving them completely helpless and vulnerable to follow-up attacks. This becomes even more dangerous on Hard or Epic, where Freezing Blast gains a 50-50 chance of inflicting its status on each player.
Fortunately, the Zircon Ore can be easily dealt with before it has a chance to act. If killing it outright is infeasible, it can be afflicted with Syphon or Berserk to prevent it from self-destructing, forcing it to fall back on a weak ramming attack instead. If your main concern is specifically Freezing Blast, it can be deterred from using it if the party's Ice resistance is high enough; be prepared for the increased likelihood of Barrier, however. It's also completely vulnerable to Stun and (ironically) Freeze, which will stop it in its tracks.
The Zircon Ore absorbs Ice, resists Bio, and is immune to Earth, Poison, and Virus, but it's weak to Wind, Bomb, and especially Fire. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, it loses its Bomb and Wind weaknesses while becoming resistant to Water.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Action
- If Syphoned or Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Barrier;
- If Syphoned or Berserked → Bash;
- If a randomly selected foe has at least a 15% Magic Defence buff or no other foes are left → Freezing Blast;
- Otherwise → Freezing Blast (1/2), Barrier (1/2).
* On Hard/Epic, Freezing Blast has up to a 80% chance to be replaced by Bash depending on player party Ice resistance.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 33% and not Syphoned → Freezing Blast.
Summon[]
The Zircon Ore can be captured and used as a summon; the Bubble Dress has a chance to summon it between turns as well. It sacrifices itself to cast Barrier on the party, greatly raising their Magic Defence.
The Zircon Ore's buff is as strong as a fully-upgraded Barrier skill, but the latter benefits from buff-boosting equipment, allowing the party to save their SP for other summons. However, the Zircon Ore isn't a bad "panic button" option if Barrier is on cooldown or hasn't been fully upgraded, especially since it can be captured as early as the Ice Cave.

Trivia[]
- The Zircon Ore can be considered the magical Ice-based counterpart of the Topaz Ore. Their bodies are covered with the spikiest crystals of any Ores, they are associated with a powerful defensive buff, and their summons cost the same amount of SP.
